In the early days of blogging, I quickly realized how much receiving comments meant to me. There's something uniquely personal about people engaging with you, both online and in real life. The vulnerability of putting a piece of yourself out there, online, is oddly exhilarating and terrifying. I often find myself editing and second-guessing things, constantly going back and forth on what to share.
To balance this, I decided to start something small but meaningful: after reading an article, I would leave a comment. Whether it was a thought, an appreciation for something I liked, or my own perspective, I made sure to leave something behind. As time went on, people began replying, either thanking me for my insights or just showing appreciation. These small exchanges felt rewarding, like I was doing something positive, much like how I feel when someone takes the time to engage with me. It takes only a few seconds to leave a comment, but the return on that investment is immense.
For an entire week, I made this a habit. I received more emails and replies than I expected, and the experience of checking back to see those responses was incredibly enjoyable. It made me want to continue this practice every time I consume something online. I realized that, just as I enjoy when someone acknowledges my thoughts, the simplest gesture of engaging with others can create a ripple of good feelings— something that costs almost nothing, yet gives so much in return.
